AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb have announced that they are collaborating to develop a statin that is approved for clinical use in the United States and is the first of a new class of statins.
In January, the company announced that it was the first to approve a new class of cholesterol-reducing agents, called statins. It is also the first to use the brand name of Lipitor, and to launch the cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor, as well as the first to market an injectable form of rosuvastatin.
“We are very pleased to have partnered with AstraZeneca and we are excited to have received approval from our regulators and industry officials,” said Sidney Wolfe, CEO of Public Citizen. “We are pleased to have partnered with Bristol-Myers Squibb and we are pleased to be able to launch a new class of statins, as well as the first of a new class of lipid-lowering agents, for use in adults and pediatric patients.”
Statins are a class of drugs that inhibit the action of certain proteins (called lipids) in the body to help lower cholesterol. The FDA approved Crestor in the United States in March 2005 and is now in Phase 3 trials.
The statin is the first of its kind to be approved in the United States and is the first to receive approval from the Food and Drug Administration.
The drug is also the first of the five new class of drugs in the United States approved for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia.
“We are excited to be working with a company that is committed to providing affordable, effective, and affordable health care to millions of people with our lipid-lowering and lipid-lowering drugs,” said Michael Silverstein, president of AstraZeneca and chairman of the company’s board of directors.
“This partnership provides the best possible chance to bring these drugs to market and the best opportunity to ensure that we can continue to be a leader in this important area of health care,” he added.
The company announced that it had signed a $500 million agreement with Bristol-Myers Squibb to develop a new class of statins. The company is working with the world’s leading drug manufacturers on new drug development, to bring to market all the existing class of statins in the United States.
The collaboration was expected to cost more than $500 million and is anticipated to bring the number of drugs approved for treatment of the most common forms of lipid-lowering in the United States to $1.8 billion by 2027.
The collaboration between Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca will mean that both companies will work together to develop and commercialize a new class of cholesterol-reducing drugs, called statins, that will be approved for clinical use in the United States.
The company has not disclosed when the drug will launch in the United States and will continue to focus on developing and commercializing the drug. AstraZeneca is currently working with Bristol-Myers Squibb to develop a new class of lipid-lowering agents called statins.
The company has previously announced that it would be collaborating with Bristol-Myers Squibb to develop and commercialize a new lipid-lowering drug called rosuvastatin. The company is already in Phase 3 clinical trials and has already submitted to the FDA, the first of its kind to be approved in the United States.
The company has also announced that it is working with AstraZeneca to develop a new class of cholesterol-reducing agents, called statins, which will be approved in the United States and are already in Phase 3 trials.
